Interesting thoughts, don't know if that's the way it's going to go down, or in that short of time, but it would be nice for a single console platform, though I think corporate greed & conflicts may stand in the the way on that one.
I agree with him, there are hardcore gamers who play just one game, and it might be Bejeweled! It's funny a casual gamer really means someone who plays games a few times a week, but a casual game is a bad definition because sometimes they are played ALOT! I've know people who played Minesweeper at least 20 hours a week when it was first release with Windows, and don't forget the hardcore Puzzle Quest addicts. Unfortunately no one is going to be able to coin a different name for those games, too late.
Smoke another one buddy. In reality gaming consoles are growing and not just the recent released console, the legacy consoles are out there and are being played on by the youth of the world. Consoles will be here for awhile with continued positive growth. However I think the next "next gen" will need to address a few major issues, specifically in the hardware realm in regards to power consumption, cooling, production costs and storage capacity, all which the three big players are running into problems with.
Adam I think your fear is correct, more of the developers will most likely jump out of e3 and do their own thing. Unless of course they bring back something similar to the years gone, but again that is probably not going to happen. Why spend $$ showing off your product when the press is just there, and not the thousands of venerable fans that showed when e3 was good. It doesn't make business sense to, host your own show, hell invite the public to get hands on, make them want your games!
Kind of spills over and hints from what several other companies said that the new e3 format sucks. Perhaps Nintendo is just being nice, and saying we're not showing off our core gamer stuff, because well, honestly E3 sucks and only CNN is watching and real gaming media is mildly interested. It's not like it used to be, a huge amazing, bonanza.
