Microsoft has unveiled its latest attempt to get Xbox Live Silver subscribers to turn Gold by launching Friendship is Free, a new initiative that gives all 360 users online-multiplayer access on a selection of XBLA titles.
The offer, which runs throughout December, enables free Live multiplayer for 8 XBLA games: Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, A Kingdom for Keflings, Aegis Wing, Hardwood Hearts, Hardwood Spades, Small Arms, UNO and Bomberman Live. These games will of course still need to be purchased to play.
It is suspected that this service is available in the UK as well as the US, though not confirmed. A Microsoft spokesperson was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.

This is a good move from Microsoft but its debatable if it will be enough to woo Silver memberships who believe online play should be free or the more laid back of us who prefer to pick up and play for half an hour and then move on.
That aside i applaud SF and Bomberman and will be taking full advantage of SF, i'll be using myself as a test subject and see if i start subscribing in January.
Cool.
Microsoft needs to do this sort of stuff more.

By now XBL should be free from the get go. I can play online for free on my PC and PS3 (even the Wii has free online gaming), the 360 should be no different.
Saying that, you'll always get the nay sayers defending the subscription fee. It's nonsense.
I guess this is targeted to all the new Arcade SKU purchasers? Meh, wouldn't it have made more sense to just make Live! free to Silver subscribers for all games on a few targeted weekends?
I agree, being stingy like this won't help them the way they want...kind of dum and lame all at the same time. Just make all accounts gold for a 1 month, let people get into it, then yank the chain (so to speak) and they'll get more than they were hoping for...eventually, if Sony every gets there act together with PSN, Microsoft is going to have to go free with Live anyway...Am I speaking greek on this matter?
I believe, at least in the US, that they already have promotions like that that run every once in a while.
