Following our report on the convincing suggestions that Microsoft has updated the 360’s motherboard – a measure intended to make the console less susceptible to RRoD-related hardware failures – Microsoft has confirmed that 360’s Arcade SKU will feature 256MB of flash memory.
"We are constantly updating the consoles’ more than 1700 internal components,” a Microsoft spokesperson told 360fanboy, adding that “we can confirm that we are moving to internal memory for the Xbox 360 Arcade. The physical internal memory is the same size as the previous external memory units - 256MB."
That extra 256MB of on-board flash memory will encourage Arcade users to install all 128MBs of NXE, which will in turn provide Arcade owners more incentives to explore the console’s services and online capabilities.
The new hardware reportedly features 65 nanometer AMD GPUs (as opposed to the 90nm components featured in the console’s first edition), as well as a 150w power brick. Helped by the console’s rearranged interior, these measures are said to allow for far cooler running console, theoretically circumventing the key causes of 360 hardware failures.
Again, Microsoft is delivering details in a piecemeal manner. It remains unknown when the new Arcade units will arrive in both the US and UK. Edge is seeking comment on this matter.
I'm thinking about replacing my launch elite with one of these new arcades and just throwing my 120gig on it. Even with the game installs, the system sounds like a damn jet engine.
Yeah!!! go one better and rip the guts out of the arcade and transplant it into the Elite's nice black box :P don't be the gray man of gaming :P
Hmm, something about my Elite's dependability and the potential loss of the remainder of my 3 year warranty makes me a little hesistant to open that bad boy up.
Miles,
I also care about the color, but its just too damn loud. Sometimes my wife and I at night have to turn my receiver up just to be able to hear over my xbox.
isn't your launch elite a rather awesome black tho?
It is, but I don't need it for the HDMI any more and my wife's 360 is super quiet (I actually stole hers and already swapped my elite out any way, but still want to replace it). But for some reason when I queue up game/video downloads on xbox.com, it goes to my elite instead of the 360 I currently have my gamertag and hard drive on. I guess maybe it has to do with some weird DRM thing or something...
And now that I think about it, you may have been joking...
I'm confused.. 360Arcade's Don't have HDMI, but 360Elites Do, right? But both will be able to achieve High Definition with a Component AV Cable
I don't have a HD Ready TV you see, I have a projector.. I do have similar cable for my ps3 and can achieve upto 1080, I assume that is the same with the XBox?
Also in terms of Hard Disk drives. Are you able to swap out to an after market drive? Again, I have transplanted a big Samsung sata drive into my PS3, can you do this with the Xbox also. Or are you bound to buy branded XBox Drives only?
If any would could let me know or point me in the right direction. I would be most grateful..
All 360s include an HDMI PORT, the only difference is the Elite comes WITH an HDMI cable, while the premium 60gig model comes with component cables and composite cables, and the arcade only comes with composite.
360 Can achieve 1080p through component, VGA (PC), and HDMI. VGA does not come with any of the models and must be purchased separately.
You can use external USB hard drives, but not for game saves or marketplace stuff. Just streaming videos/pictures/music you have on your hardrive to your 360. There is an unlicensed peripheral that allows you to transfer proprietary 360 save information to a 3rd party hard drive. Info listed below.
Datel Xsata
The Datel Xsata is an unlicensed accessory used to transfer materials from the console's hard drive to a Windows PC. The XSATA is a device that sits between the 360's hard drive and the console itself. Use of this device to transfer saved game files for the purpose of unlocking achievements is prohibited by Microsoft in the Xbox Live Terms of Service agreement.
USB Storage Devices
The Xbox 360 can read USB storage devices such as thumb drives, iPods, mp3 players, and hard drives. These can be used to play music, or to view pictures and videos. The file systems FAT, FAT32 and HFS+ are supported but NTFS is not.

No im actually nerdy enough to care what colour my console is :/
My replacement 360 sent from Frankfurt is one of the new ones, the NXE works without the hard drive attached.
