This is a diverse and technically challenging role, the main aim of which is to manage the code team to achieve the highest quality levels of programming. The Lead will also be responsible for reporting issues upwards, as well as maintaining a flow of information back to the team.
This is a hands on role and the successful candidate must be prepared to step in and assist the team in any area of the development. A high level of expertise across the board is thus required.
Reports to: Game Director
Takes reports from: Programming team
Primary objective: To manage the programming team to achieve the highest standards of code generation and practise through a hands-on “lead from the front” approach, based on a broad expertise in games development.
Responsibilities:
- Man management of the coding team, including regular code reviews and appraisals
- Creation of TDD and ownership of all technical project issues within the code team
- Set code standards and ensure “best practise” mentality across the team
- Progress reporting on code and staff issues to Game Director and Company Directors
- Mentoring of staff where required
- Recruitment of new programmers
- Provide back-up/support for all areas of the code base
- Remain ‘up-to-date’ on all aspects of cutting edge games programming
Required skills & experience:
- At least 1 previously published title as Lead
- High level of programming skills gained in a game development environment
- Very strong C++ with exposure to Design Patterns, STL with solid engineering techniques
- Excellent troubleshooting abilities and/or the resourcefulness to obtain solutions
- Experience with PC MMO development is desirable but we are willing to consider previous experience on other types of project in a similar capacity
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Able to give and receive constructive feedback
- Excellent organisational skills
- Familiarity with sub-systems such as networking, rendering (DirectX/OpenGL), physics, game-play and user interface
